At least twice a week, I serve rice with dinner because it's quick and simple to prepare, great for soaking up sauces and taming a mildly spicy main course, and when all else fails, a picky eater will eat it. All Asian dishes go incredibly well with rice.

2 cups of water to 1 cup of white rice is the standard water to rice ratio. Simply make sure you are using a pot big enough to hold the rice as it cooks and expands. You can easily double or even triple the recipe.

How to Cook Perfect Rice on the Stove

– 2 cups water – ½ teaspoon salt – 1 tablespoon butter or oil optional – 1 cup long grain white rice


Using a medium saucepan, bring the water to a boil. Salt and butter should be added after the butter has melted.


Stir in the rice after the water has come back to a boil. Bring the water back to a gentle simmer. Readjust the heat to low, cover the pot, and stir once more. Maintain a low simmer for the rice, and cover the pot.


At around 17 minutes, start assessing whether the rice is tender and the liquid has been completely absorbed. Especially if you are making more rice, it could take up to 25.


After the rice has finished cooking, turn off the heat and let it stand for a few more minutes so that it can fully absorb any liquid. Remove the lid, give the rice a fork-fluff, and let it sit for an additional 2 minutes or so to allow some of the excess moisture to evaporate.
