The Perfect Baking Powder Substitutes (+3 Dessert Recipes)

When you bake on a regular basis, baking powder is a must in your kitchen. When you do not have baking powder, you have baking soda. But what to do if you do not have both ingredients? Surely, you can buy it in the nearest supermarket. But sometimes baking inspiration comes after midnight, so what is the way out?

When my cousin called me yesterday late in the evening and said that she was going to visit me in the morning, I had to wrack my brains before I realized that I actually had nothing sweet in the house. I had one night to bake some treats, but it turned out I had no baking powder in the pantry. What’s worse, I had no baking soda either.

I panicked for a minute, the next one I spent googling “best baking powder substitute” and the next few minutes I spent experimenting with all those tips. Some tips were weird and funny, while two others saved my night and morning, of course. So, if you run out of baking powder and baking soda, calm down.

Just use 1 teaspoon potassium bicarbonate and 1/3 teaspoon of salt for 1 teaspoon baking soda. If you have baking powder, use 1/4 tsp. baking soda and 1/2 tsp. cream tartar for 1 teaspoon baking powder. Or, mix ½ teaspoon baking soda with ½ cup buttermilk, plain yogurt, or sour milk.

Baking soda and vinegar work great too. People used these two ingredients when baking powder didn’t exist. Actually, my grandma keeps using them in baked goods. Use 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon vinegar for 1 teaspoon baking powder. Here are three delicious and easy-to-follow dessert recipes that do not involve baking powder.
