An Arnie Palmer is quite refreshing on those dog days of summer. The drink is named after the American professional golfer, Arnold Palmer. Legend has it that while golfing in his country club in Colorado, he requested that lemonade be added to his iced tea but the bartender initially refused. After some cajoling, the bartender finally relented. And thus the Arnold Palmer was born.
I infused some fresh mint from the garden in the tea and some cardamom seeds in the lemonade. You can of course either just make a Morrocan tea or a cardamom lemonade but the combination of the two is simply divine.
This drink is dedicated to our friend Scott who is an avid golfer. Summer is on its way and I bet he’s going to be back on the greens very soon. Scott: I promise that next time you stop by the house, I’ll make an Arnold Palmer for you and Lulu.

2. Ingredients for Mint and Cardamom Flavored Arnold Palmer (Lemonade with Iced Tea)
- 4 tea bags black tea
- 2 1/2 cups superfine sugar, to taste
- 4 cups water
- 1 1/2 cups Meyer lemon juice, freshly squeezed (6 Meyer lemons), + extra for garnish
- 1 quart ice cubes
- 2 tsp cardamom seeds
- 6 sprigs fresh mint, + extra for garnish
3. Directions:
- For the Morrocan tea: Slightly bruise the mint leaves using a mortar and pestle.Bring 4 cups of water to a roaring boil. Remove from the stove. Immediately place the mint leaves into the water. Steep the black tea for about 4 minutes (no longer!). Strain the liquid and discard the tea bags and mint leaves. For the cardamom syrup: In a mortar and pestle, grind the cardamom seeds. Crush all the nits and gather about 2 teaspoons of cardamom powder. In a saucepan, dissolve the sugar in about 1 cup of water. Add the cardamom powder. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 2 minutes. Remove from the stove and cool completely. Add the Meyer lemon juice.
- For the Arnold Palmer: Combine the cardamom syrup and the Morrocan tea. Place the ice cubes in a tall pitcher, top with the drink. Garnish with a few slices of Meyer lemon and a sprig of fresh mint.
- Serve in tall glasses with ice, stir and enjoy with tea cakes or cookies.
