Recipe For KFC Eleven Herbs and Spices for Fried Chicken Copycat

Note: this recipe came from a newspaper clipping claiming to be a KFC 11 Herbs and Spices Clone. I did not develop this recipe and I know that it is not an exact match.

My husband grew up eating fried chicken often. His mom made it about once a week. She always made mashed potatoes and the most amazing milk gravy to go with it. I learned after a few years of marriage that the gravy was so good because she would drain most of the oil out of the frying pan in which she had cooked the chicken and then she’d make the gravy there, with the little bits of meat and fried outer stuff from the chicken. It was so good, I can almost still taste it.

Not only did they eat friend chicken once a week, it was also their travel food of choice. There were certain fried chicken joints along the interstate where they’d always stop. When my husband and I got married and took our first trip, he ran to Albertson’s and bought an eight piece bag of friend chicken for the cooler. I made pizza. Pizza was my family’s travel food of choice. So we set off across a few states. He ate his chicken and I ate my pizza. Over the years, I stopped making pizza, opting instead for sandwiches. We still stop at least once at a KFC for fried chicken. It’s become our family’s travel food of choice, too.

Many, many years ago, my husband found this recipe in a newspaper. He clipped it for me and brought it home. I think it was a hint that I didn’t make enough of his favorite savory treat. I am the health freak of the family. Fried chicken isn’t a staple. It’s an event. When I do actually deign to fry, these eleven herbs and spices sure add a great flavor to the chicken. I have also found that they make a pretty good rub for steak and pork chops on the grill.
