I know what you are thinking. Leftover hummus? But the fact is we all probably have hummus hanging out in our fridges right now that we need to use up before it expires. While it is obviously one of the most flavorful, not to mention healthful, dips out there, you might be surprised to find out that there is so much more you can do with hummus. Here are just a few ways to rethink your hummus usage.
1. Deviled eggs
Deviled eggs are delicious, but all that mayo can tack on unnecessary calories. Instead, swap it for hummus and get an extra wallop of protein. For every 8 eggs yolks, incorporate 1/4 cup of hummus plus 1/4 cup of olive oil.
2. Reimagined Alfredo sauce
If you love Alfredo sauce but do not exactly love how it impacts your waistline, create a healthier spin on it with hummus. Mix two heaping tablespoons of hummus with two heaping tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt. Toss it with your favorite cooked whole-wheat pasta and dinner is done.
3. Salad dressing
Make your own healthier (and tastier!) salad dressing with hummus. Simply whisk a cup of hummus along with two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice and one tablespoon of water. Season to taste with salt and pepper and you will have your new favorite salad dressing.
4. Greek pita pizza
Take the best of Italy and Greece to make your own creatively satisfying meal. Grab a whole-wheat pita as your base and smear hummus on top. Then add on your favorite Greek toppings like feta cheese, black olives, cucumbers, onions, banana peppers, and tomatoes for a healthy yet flavorful dish.
5. Scrambled eggs
Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, make it really count. The next time you feel like scrambled eggs, whisk in a spoonful of hummus prior to cooking. It adds a unique flavor and gives it a heartier texture.
6. Mexiterranean dip
Something incredible happens when you mix equal parts of hummus and mashed up avocados. You get a robust dip that is infused with the flavors of the Mediterranean and Mexico. Best of all, it is heart-healthy and fiber-full so this is one snack you can rely on to keep you filled up.
7. Mashed potatoes
It is a staple side dish in the American diet, but thanks to butter and cream, it is not a very healthful option. If you are minding your health and want mashed potatoes, simply swap out the butter and cream for about two tablespoons of hummus.
8. Bagel schmear
Bagels are a bit high-calorie and that calorie count skyrockets when you slather it with cream cheese. Switch to hummus as your schmear of choice and you will be saving loads of calories without sacrificing flavor.
And that is just a few things that you can do with your hummus. Replace mayonnaise on your sandwiches with a few swipes of hummus. Make soups creamier and dreamier with hummus instead of using creams that will add more fat.
